  • Letterman Jacket Patches

I have a customer asking for a price to sew the chenille patches on to the leather sleeves of lettermans jackets. Has anyone done this before and what do you charge? Also any tips on working with the leather? I'm thinking a light ballpoint 80/12. Is that correct?

I use my friends commercial sewing machine with a heavy thread and regular needle. It is a big job and we don't charge much, $3 (small) $5 (medium) $9 (large) or a set price for all the patches. We stitch the inside of the large letter that the pins will go on, off the jacket. When sewn on the jacket, leave the inside open so they can put their pins on.

I would be interested in what kind of commercial machine you use to sew patches on. I have had so many requests to do this but it is extremely difficult if the arm of the machine isn't very long. Do you open the seam on the sleeve? By the way, I don't think you are charging enough. Just my opinion.
        Thanks,

My friend does commercial alterations and has many machines but the one we use for the lettermen jackets is a Consew. The knee-lift raises the presser foot high enough to get the wool jacket and patch moved around to sew. I have looked on the web to find a machine for myself, haven't found just what I want.
I know we don't charge as much as some, but the student has over $100 in a jacket and our bill is $40-$45 for all the patches plus embroidering their name.
We open a side seam all the way into the sleeve a little. Not too far, you have to sew it up again.
My friend get dozens of these to do, I get maybe 4. I have her sew mine, she has me embroider hers.
