  • BACKING on STRUCTURED HATS

hi there... we are running amaya xt's and always have thread breaks on hats. our flats seem to sew relatively fine...

our art is digitized by professionals for whatever we happen to be sewing on at the time: visors, hats, shirts, whatever... anyway, i'm wondering if we need to use backing on hats that are buckram-fused already?

    many thanks in advance,
    fj

I always use backing on structured hats. Make sure your pressure foot is all the way up and your actifeed is on auto and I have mine set to go no lower then 3 on my actifeed and I sew out quite a bit of hats this way with no problem...

    Hope it helps!

I have to agree with TinaK on the backing. I do my settings a bit differently tho. My Auto-Actifeed is set to a 7 or an 8 minumum, depends on the cap and amount of backing. My presser foot is up 3-4 clicks from the bottom, still want it to do it's job. You also need to keep an eye on your needles. I have a repeat job on some wool blend OTTO caps that will eat the tip off a needle in about 20K stitches. Last thing----HOOPING, if it ain't right you are doomed.

WIth structured caps most embroiderers use a 2.5 oz "wet laid" non woven -

        http://www.lebowconsulting.com/stabi...icles.htm#glos

It will help you to overcome the bumps and rough pieces of the cotton or monofilament nuckrum

Use a stabilizer that contains needle lubrioants as it will aid in needle glide
It will definitely also improve your registration or defimnition significantly

As usual pls e-mail me off list if you want samples

        Sincerely

wow! thanks everybody for the good advice. it would appear we have some (read: tons of) learning to do yet! we are a production screen print shop that lost our contract embroiderer (they run plain amayas and xt's and make it look so easy), so at the end of 2007, we bought a couple of heads and gave it a whirl. it is not easy, i can tell you that.

and herb, i think your suggestion about hooping is right on. i watched the video on cap hooping and ours look nothing like the one you had on the video... i'm assuming you're the same herb as was in the video, anyway.

          THANK YOU ALL!!!!

Exactly how do you set a minimum value for auto actifeed? I think Tina mentioned once that it was under settings, but I can't seem to find it.

            Thanks,

This is a newer feature so it will depend on what version of software you are running. I think it came our in ver 7 but not positive on that.

I believe it is on the Settings Menu| Thread Feed tab.
