  • thread breaks

I"ve had a lot of thread breaks lately. To be exact over 25 in each 3" circle-solid fill. I tried the black thread, that was causing the problem, on other needles, changed needles, changed bobbins, worked on the tension, slowed speed down to 700 and increased it to the max, etc. I went thru the topics on the web page and tried everything I could. There was so much lint coming off the thread that my white material looked like an Idaho shelf after a dust storm. I then changed from Melco's thread to Isacord and wonder of wonders..I haven't had a thread break since. Melco thread works fine on everything except solid fills-for me. Melco told me that the black was the hardest to work with since it has the most dye in it and to be gentle. My question is..how can you be gentle with thread?

    Betsy,
What kind of fabric and backing are you using? I've used melco for years and no problems.Have you ever stitched this design out before and if so did you have problems with it then? I have noticed that when I don't use enough backing I have lots of problems. Last week I did 32 hand towels and after finishing about half of them, the very next one I had one thred break after another. It was fine though on the very next towel, so I figured the hooping of the towel wasn't tight enough. But, most thread brands are basically the same. Debbie

      Hi Debbie,
I had two different designs both on trigger poplin. One had 2 oz. of backing and the other had 4 oz. The thread worked great on borders and lettering but snapped continuous on any kind of fill. I even did the design in a different color and it ran fine.

        Betsy,

It's possible you got a bad spool of thread. It does happen occasionally.

My black thread continues to be a nightmare for me. Melco sent me a replacement spool at no charge thinking I might have received a bad spool in the first one. Only slightly better. Like you, I can run the design in all other colors with no problems, but as soon as I use the black thread (even after trying different needles), I get repeated thread breaks. I think I will try the thread you had success with in black. I use a lot of black, so I'm willing to try something new.

funny thing is i had the same problem with black thread too. It was melco's thread. I switched to isacord about 9 months ago and i love it. I tried madeira too. I found the thread didnt sew out as nice as coats or isacord.

I have my first spool of Iscord on order and I can't wait to try it. I figured black was a good 'test' color and if it goes as well as others have experienced, I will probably start replacing colors with Isacord as I need to order them.
