I am just beginning to learn how to digitize and scan company logos however, I have a question for you experienced digitizers. When you scan a logo into your computer - do you scan it as a bmp, jpg or some other type of file. I have tried to digitize a logo twice but when I scan it is so distorted and takes hours to correct the logo in order to digitize it. I do have Corel Draw so would it be better to scan or import it into this software so it doesn't get distorted. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

DesignShop can not read GIF or JPG. I save all of mine as a BMP file (You can always save a BMP file as a GIF or JPG later if you need to.)
When you open DesignShop, make sure the type of file says all images and your BMP will appear on the screen. Resize the image to your embroidered size before you start digitizing the logo.

Steve,
DS can read JPG. When I scan I usually use a 300 DPI JPG because the file size is not too large but the quality is good. It depends alot on the original artwork as far as size and clarity. The ideal file to have is eps or cdr cause then you have vector art which is nice and clean and you have a greater possibility of having DS do some auto digitizing for you but you can get nice art in jpg format as well. Alot rides on how the original art you are scanning was done and also the size of it compared to the size you will be digitizing.Aaron Sargent
Pegboard
541-727-1440

DS can read jpg! Choose graphics when you go to open a file and it should show all readable files. I would check the scanner properties. Does the file open/import distorted in Corel Draw? If not, resave as a jpg and open (or copy and paste from Corel into DS--not sure what level you have to have). Good Luck

I had what I thought was a clean copy of a logo which I scanned and saved as a bmp file when I opened it to both DS or another digitizing program I've used the colors are distorted and I was wondering if I save it as a cdr file maybe it would not be this way. Cause I had to go into either Paint or Corel Draw and clean up the scan so there would not be so many different colors.Beckie Henderson
Bee-Utiful Creations

Hey Beckie,
Scan the image save as a jpg. then upload to this website http://vectormagic.stanford.edu/vectorize/ You will be amazed at how much better this program works than Corel or Illi I have Corel X3 and this is much better at convertering to vectors.

Steve,
You must have only the Design Shop level. This is one of the limitations of Design Shop. You would have to upgrade to a higher level, such as DS Pro or Pro Plus, in order to import graphics in other formats. I suggest you convert your JPG file to a BMP and bring it in that way.

You are correct Ed. I didn't want to spend the extra $4000 for the next version and probably never will upgrade it to something higher. I can convert just about any graphic to a BMP which works for me. As a part-time embroiderer, I can not justify spending that much for the upgrade.

I upgraded to Corel Draw X3 from version 12 primarily because the trace function is so much better... and it is, but still not great. However, I just tried out http://vectormagic.stanford.edu/vectorize that Curtis suggested and this is great! I used the defaults first and was a little dissapointed that it missed some details. I had to tell it to use more colors and go to high detail... perfection! Thank you, Curtis!
