  • Embroidery on Duffel Bags

I have a customer asking for an estimate for two duffel bags from SanMar. I haven't done embroidery on duffel bags and I was wondering if anyone could give me feedback on how to do it, if it is even possible. I know there are some items out there that are just not feasible to embroider.
The bags are BG98 Port & Co. Large Duffel and BG99 Port & Co. Sport Duffel.
    Thanks so much!

Hi Mary - I do a lot of sales of the BG98 and BG97. I don't use the BG99. The two I use are very easy to embroider with one big caveat that maybe somebody else can help me on.

The "pocket" that you embroider on which is on the side of the bag has a very limited depth and width that is accessible. If I'm explaining this correctly, while the pocket looks large, the combination of the hoop/clamp/frame and the cylindar arm of the XT severely limits the usable sewing space.

I am sewing a school name and logo now on about 10 bags and while it looks great, the design is much closer to the top of the pocket than the bottom. I can't get the machine to go down that far without pulling the bag from the frame. Other than that, the bags are easy to sew.

If somebody can give me a hint about how to surmount this obstacle, I'd appreciate it.

    Good luck

I recently did a bunch of duffel bags for a cheer leading team. I used a regular round 18 cm hoop, no backing. Had a devil of a time hooping the darn thing, but after 20 bags I got better at it. Since you only have 2, you'll do OK. But you have to watch that the hoop doesn't come apart. I found that if I marked a vertical line top to bottom and marked my hoop, that I had a much easier time lining thing up. I did the design on the round end.

Another job I had needed the 24 x 24 cm square hoop. Same thing - no backing, doesn't need it. Just go slowly and you'll be alright.

Thank you for your replies. I will hold onto them, as my customer changed his mind and ordered different garments, etc...
