  • Hat Hooping

I have 2 Amaya XT and am trying to run hats.(unsuccessfully) In the hoop selection, what do I select, WACF or XT Extended WACF? I've tried both. I pretty much know how to put the cap on the frame. But when I put it on the machine and start to sew, the carriage goes back and the arm pushes the hat off the frame. What am I doing wrong? I have done hats on my 2002 amaya(which I traded in), but now I am stumped.

    Barbra,
If you have the cap drivers that are the two piece design, then you need to select the XT Extended designation. All of the newer XT's are being sent out with the two piece design.....the older 1 piece designs used the WACF designation.

The other thing to keep in mind is to make sure that your design is "centered" and saved that way in Design Shop, otherwise the capdriver may make the kind of movement you have described when trying to center the hoop and or design in OS....

      Ed,
The amaya is new since Jan 2006. Probably not new enough. The driver is the one piece. This is the first time I'm making hats with this machine. The design was centered and saved the way you said. Is there a picture someplace so I can compare? Any other suggestions?

          Herb,
Thank you so much! Did I hear the Springers in the background? Thanks to the camera person, too.

I know this thread is older, but my machine is doing the same thing with popping the cap frame off the driver. I have the correct XT extended selected for my cap. I believe it is something to do with the 2nd piece of the driver that has the 2 chrome rods on them as well as the 2 thumb screws that tighten the piece that goes into the t-rail. If I tighten the thumb screws too much then I get an error message. If I loosen them then it goes through the tracing part and will pop the cap right off because the part of the driver that has the chrome rods is pushed out by the rest of the driver but when it moves back in towards the machine to finish the design the piece of the driver with the chrome rods doesn't move back with the rest.

Please help. It's so hard to describe my problem!

Are you saying that the piece that has the thumb screws on it is actually moving? It is not supposed to move at all. That's why we are clamping it down with the thumb screws. Without seeing how you have it put together, my guess would be that it (that is the first piece you put on that has the thumb screws and the two rods) is not on correctly. It should be all the way back as far as it can possibly go. The only things that moves is the hoop itself and never the rods it rides on.

Do you have the hoop limits on? For hats I always leave it on.

How tall is your design? Anything over 2 1/2" will give you trouble! And if the hat is a low profile, then I'd make it even shorter, say 2 " tall.

Have you tried to do a trace without the hat on? You shouldn't have any trouble at all. It should just trace with nothing slipping. Hoop the hat (and I am presuming that you are hooping correctly); it should survive the trace. If it doesn't then either it is the hat itself or the way you are hooping it.

              Good luck,

On the AMAYA XT the thumbscrews ( larger flat wheel type screw) I think you are talking about go towards the back. In the manuals that came with my machine the pictures show it the opposite way. I leave mine on all the time, but had to send it back once for repair. When I got it back I looked at the manual about how to put it on, and realized then the pics in the manuals must be for an older machine. The same thing may be confusing you.

I just did a run of hats for the first time on my XT (new version) and had trouble with the caps being popped off the hoop, but I did figure it out. I made sure that in Design Shop I selected the XT Extened WACF, brought up the grid lines and center lines mirrored the design vertically and horizontally (as it would need to be for the cap). Placed the design exactly where I wanted it on the hat (I was sewing on a 6 panel low profile) and saved. Then when I loaded the design to the machine in OS, I worked out perfectly. I also started with the cap frame all the way out towards me before loading the design to the machine. Then once I put the cap hoop on with the cap I centered the laser horizontally then moved the hoop back to where I needed it and of course did the trace.

I have no idea if that made any sense, I just think if you line everything up correctly in DS it will work for you in OS. Also, don't mess with the placement of the design in OS on the screen (such as hitting the Center Design button), that will mess everything up.

                  Good luck,
