  • Trademarks and Registered Logos

    Hello,
Does anyone know of a way to verify whether or no a company's logo is trademarked or registered. If there is no symbol at the end (TM or R in a circle) does that mean it's okay to embroider?
I have a small office of a national company that wants me to do some shirts for them, but is giving me the run around on written permission. However I find it hard to believe that this company would not have a trademarked logo, even though there is no symbol.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I don't want to loose business, but I don't want to do something and have it come back to haunt me, legally.

    Thanks so much!

It depends on how technical you want to get. You shouldn't really do it without permission. However if you are doing it for say a branch office of a national company you can get a letter from them stating they are authorized to use the logo and are giving you permission to reproduce it for them. You are still taking a chance, but a smaller one. What I have done in the past is call the national office and talk to the marketing department and ask what the policy is on local branches reproducing the logo for apparel.

    Good Luck,

      Thanks Steve I,
I will give the national office a call.
I did find the website for the patent and trademark office:
      www.uspto.gov
And by searching on there I was able to find that company I was inquiring about has a registered trademark. But I do like the idea of having national office permission versus the small office, especially since they are so set on the fact I don't need permission at all.

      I appreciate the advice!
