  • Metalic Threads

I am now thinking of using metalic threads on my Amaya-XT. I have tried once in the past and have experienced thread breaks. Can I use the needles supplied with my machine or do I have to order different needles. And what other tips does anyone have when it comes to sewing with metalic threads. Thanks for any help that you can provide!

I just finished 36 prom sashes and used metalic threads. The best was the smoother ones-MelcoMart sells one brand and the other was Robinson Anton. I used auto material thickness, two layers of tear-away and underlay of edgewalk and zigzag. I used as little density on top as possible to try to prevent puckering. The metalic threads that have more of a fleck shread more often although some came out nice. I had many more thread breaks with the rougher edged ones from Maderia. I set the Amaya to metalic in the color sequence part of the software. White and black backgrounds come out much better than the purple and gold backgrounds in case you have a choice.

Change the density by about 10% for the metallic color and slow the speed down some and it should fine fine. No need to change needles. I use Isamet for metallic and it runs fine. I know a lot of people have used RA and they say that runs fine as well.

In this post it is suggested to change the density by about 10%. Is that up or down? I am using 85/12 needle. Having a little trouble with thread breaks and just went back and did a search on metallic threads. Thanks for any help!

            Chrissy~

What brand thread are you using? Also, make sure to change your cut length to Metallic and your thread type to metallic which I do in OS when I enter my thread colors.
I use Madeira Metallic thread with a 75/11 needle and I have yet to change my density in the design. Metallics you need to lower your speed as well to about 800 spm.

            Good Luck!

I run IsaMet Metallic thread fill stitch at 3.3 density. I run satin stitch Metallic thread at 4.4 density. As Chrissy said, slow the machine down. I run it at 700spm and it runs fine.
              Your mileage may vary!

Ok, well I am using Mon-Rex metallic thread that I ordered from Melco. I did change my settings in OS to reflect metallic thread with a long tail. Is this what you guys are talking about?? By changing that it automatically slows the machine down to 850. Seems to be doing ok right now. I just am afraid to brag on it ;o) Thanks for any input!
