help with emb on sports bag!!!

hi- i put my son's name on his gym bag-i had a ton of thread breaks and i barely finished- i was using a block melco font-aprox 2 inches-
with tear away backing- i also had alot of gluey stuff on my needle??? i have no idea what it was-thanks for any advise!!!

none-just the canvas(?) then the backing i put in-i put it on the side of the bag where there is a large pocket-
