How can I tell if it is a trueType font? or if I can use it?

If the font is already installed on your computer it will show in the list of alphabets available in DS. The icon will show it as a "TT" (True Type) font
If the font is from somehwere else you will have to install the font on your machine. Just drag the icon into your fonts folder and badda bing, there it is.
Some TT fonts work well, others not so well. Lots of experimenting in this area.

Dan*dy Designs - DesignShop allows you to use TrueType fonts. Put the font into your font section in Control Panel (Keep in mind windows XP has a limit so only put them as you need them. Don't dump thousands of fonts in here!) trueType fonts have a TTF extention. When you re-open DesignShop, the TrueType font will appear in the list in the drop-down menu. Always sew a sample before running in production, There have been comments here that a couple TTF's won't run correctly but I have used about 100 of them and they all ran fine for me.
