applique

I need help with applique. I type in the letter that I want with DS ver.9. Then I insert applique, take off the letter in the tree( on the right side of the screen). Then I send it to the machine to stitch. The tackdown stitch goes is way long on the inside of the M and other letters. What step am I leaving out to make the stitch equal all around? Please help
