  • Amaya TBS upgrade kit

    Hi,

I have an older (white and red) Amaya. It was purchased used and I had a Melco tech check it out.

We just order the new rollers for it based on his recommendation. I just noticed in the Melco Mart catalog they also sell something called an Amaya TBS upgrade kit $165 and says it is needed if your machine has not been refurbed through Melco.

    1. How can I tell if my machine already has this kit?

    2. Anyone every install this kit and was it worth it?

    You get:
    1 Insulator, thread sensor PCB
    1 Needle case cover, assembly
    1 Cover, Access, Needle case
    1 thread Sensor w/base assy
    instructions and some nuts.

FYI: my machine serial number is below 322066 which Melco lists as machines that should install the kit.

I did the Thread Break Sensor kit a few years ago on both my original big reds. I think the advantage is better actifeed sensing. It was a pretty easy swap out and took about 10 minutes or so per machine. Overall, I'd say it was worth the upgrade and the machines seem to sew more accurately - however, if you aren't having a problem with actifeed and you like the way your machine sews....

BTW, if I remember correctly, the way you can tell is the cover assemblys will be notched out for the new thread break sensor.

If anyone needs a replacement original thread break sensor, I have two I'd sell you real cheap

          Hi,

          Thanks for the info.

If I look at my new Amaya I can see the red plastic end cap area on the sensor bar has a notch and is also much larger than the one on my Red/White older machine.

My older machine has a smaller round red plastic end on the sensor bar that someone has written 5632 and 4992 on. It also mounts from the top with two rivets on each side instead of from the back.

So it sounds like I have the old version if it should look exactly like the one on my newer machines.

I sometimes get thread break errors and no thread break has happened. So this might be why.

          Thanks

FYI: We ended up not replacing the thread sensor bar. Seems we only have a false threadbreak on needle 16 from time to time. But when we have extra cash we will be updating this.

One thing that helps get rid of false thread breaks (we have the original Big Red Amaya) is to gently 'turn' the silver thread sensor bar a couple times.
Don't know what it does or why, but a tech showed us that trick and it clears it up.

We were having issues with thread breaks and sew quality on the reds and discovered that the one of the two wires that connects the threadbreak sensors to the small circuit board was barely attached and was causing intermittent connections which was messing with the actifeed system.

But that was on all needles. Not just one.
